Why people choose Halton Hills

Small-town character. Georgetown and Acton have historic main streets, local shops and a strong community feel.

Nature everywhere. The Credit River, Hungry Hollow ravine, Terra Cotta and Limehouse conservation areas are close to home.

GO train access. Georgetown and Acton stations on the Kitchener line connect to Union Station.

Space and value. Larger lots and a lower tax rate than many GTA cities.

Halton Hills is a favourite with clients who want small-town life without giving up the city completely. Georgetown and Acton feel quite different, so I suggest visiting both before deciding.

What it costs to buy in Halton Hills

Land transfer tax

Halton Hills is outside the City of Toronto, so buyers pay only Ontario’s land transfer tax, not the extra Toronto municipal tax. Here’s what that looks like at typical prices:

Example purchaseOntario LTTFirst-time buyer pays
Detached home at $1,070,000$17,875$13,875
Townhouse at $520,000$6,875$2,875
Calculated using 2026 Ontario land transfer tax rates. Example prices are in line with local benchmark prices. Your lawyer will confirm the exact amount.

First-time buyers can get a refund of up to $4,000 on the Ontario land transfer tax. You (and your spouse) must never have owned a home anywhere in the world. Land transfer tax is paid on closing, on top of your down payment, so budget for it along with legal fees, title insurance and moving costs.

Property taxes

Halton Hills’s residential property tax rate is 0.955% (2025 rate; the 2026 rate was not yet published), or about $955 a year for every $100,000 of assessed value. In Ontario, property tax is based on your home’s MPAC assessed value, which is still based on January 1, 2016 values and is usually well below today’s market price. You can find a home’s assessment on its latest tax bill or through MPAC.

MPAC assessed valueApproximate yearly property tax
$400,000$3,820
$600,000$5,730
$800,000$7,640
$1,000,000$9,550
Based on the Halton Hills residential rate; excludes any separate water, garbage or local charges.

Getting around

Schools and family life

Halton Hills is served by the Halton District School Board and Halton Catholic District School Board, with French-language options through Viamonde and MonAvenir. Check each board’s school locator for a specific address.

Georgetown Hospital serves the community, and the Mold-Masters SportsPlex and Gellert Community Centre offer recreation.

Child care

Licensed child care in Ontario is far more affordable than it was a few years ago. At centres enrolled in the Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care program, fees for children under 6 are capped at $22 a day in 2026, and families with lower incomes can apply for a fee subsidy that reduces the cost further. (The long-promised $10-a-day average has not yet been reached in Ontario.)

Halton Region manages child care fee subsidies, and the Region reports that most licensed child care programs in Halton are enrolled in the reduced-fee program.

My tip: get on waitlists as early as possible, ideally several months before you move or before parental leave ends, and ask each centre whether it’s enrolled in the reduced-fee program.
